Accredited professional historians work for, or on behalf of, individuals and all types of organisations as private consultants, under contract or as employees.
Some of the groups that engage the services of PHA (SA) members are federal and state government departments, statutory authorities and agencies, local government bodies, historical societies, heritage groups, universities, museums, research organisations, libraries and private firms (particularly those specialising in planning, heritage and archaeological matters). Professional historians are experienced in undertaking historical research independently or as part of a project team. They are also available to lecture interested groups on the professional aspects of the research and writing of history, as well as on their areas of expertise.
Professional Historians work in the traditional field of education, in government agencies and museums, in areas of legal research, on heritage and planning studies, and on corporate and local histories. They are also called on to advise allied professionals who range from architects and archaeologists to town planners and valuers.
